The clerics at the First Council of Nicaea in the year 325 assured us that their work was being inspired by God. But it is evident now from the fact that the Councilors added things to the Gospels that contradict some of what Jesus said, and perhaps just as much from the fact that those that we used to think were dead are now repudiating those Gospel changes, that the Councilors’ main inspiration was their earthly boss, the Roman Emperor Constantine. What they were up to was building a religion, and the religion they were building was based on the notion that Jesus had come to die for our sins as the ultimate sacrifice to a judgmental GodSo we flat-out cannot trust the Council of Nicaea’s product to be the Inspired Word of God.

But what about the four canonical Gospels that those Councilors included in their Bible? Might the Gospels, at least, have been divinely inspired? Until a few years ago, I would have been skeptical. But lately I have been forced to accept the fact that if I am channeling my guides, my fingers can’t move fast enough; but if I try to write on my own, I cannot complete a coherent sentence. And there was one two-week period five years ago when an enormously elevated energy that Thomas told me was the Lord Himself was in my mind both day and night, and we produced an entire book that needed no editing. I know now that when we give ourselves to God, we can be used in amazing ways!

So, yes, I think it likely that the Gospels as they arrived at Nicaea had been channeled. And the additions made at Nicaea were so clearly built around adding ideas that were prominent long after the Lord’s death, and those additions were so sloppily done, that it is easy to pluck them out. The Gospels the original writers produced just decades after the death of Jesus, the ones that Nicaea tweaked much later, then went on to survive two successive translations and the custody of the Catholic Church; and still, beings who are not now in bodies assure us that they are what Jesus said. This seems to be substantial evidence that the whole process of producing the Gospels as we have them now was first channeled, and then it was overseen by elevated Beings of the highest rank. This is something I still cannot get over! Three generations of primitive people played telephone with the Lord’s teachings, after which those precious words were written down and translated from Aramaic into Greek, and thereafter from Greek into English, and that was followed by centuries of custody by clerics whose religion was very different from what Jesus teaches in the Gospels. How could the Lord’s truths have survived all of that so well that the elevated dead will still vouch for them now? They have survived only by repeated miraculous interventions. Indeed, I am quite confident that the pre-Nicaea Gospels are in fact God’s Inspired Word.

The fact that the Gospels of Matthew and Luke contain many of the same quotations has long had Biblical scholars assuming they had to have a common source. This hypothetical source is now called “Q Source,” or simple “Q” (from the German “Quelle,” meaning “source”). And what seems to be the case is that much of Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount comes right from Q, while Luke’s briefer Sermon on the Plain contains fewer of the Q quotations.

All of human history can be broken into just three stages. There are many criteria we might use to carve up humanity’s time on earth, but only one of them measures more than mere adjustments to the décor! Because there is a genuine Godhead, outside of time and outside of history, what matters in the end is whether we are able to find and come to know that genuine Godhead. When we look at what actually matters in the long arc of eternity, here are our three stages:

  • ReligionsFrom our earliest prehistory we have been living in the same energy-based reality that is ours today. People back then had spirit guides, just as we have spirit guides; and by middle age, most of us have had some sort of extraordinary experience. We have to assume this has always been true. And yet, until very recently we had no way to understand anything! So very early on, we invented gods. At first they were shorthand explanations for all the things that we couldn’t understand; but over time, we invested our gods with personalities. Soon they were making terrible demands, but fear of gods that we can placate still beats living in uncontrollable terror. And it wasn’t long before our gods and their imagined demands, concocted promises, and dreamt-up powers were being wrapped up in human-made religions.
  • Science. Eventually people began to believe they could study and try to understand what they perceived to be a solid reality. So then an informal division began to be enforced between religions and the non-religious study of our earthly environment. That was when the second stage of human history began. We were determined to know the material truth! Not much more than two thousand years ago, we made the study of the matter-based reality around us the exclusive realm of science.
  • Energy. Religions are human-made guesses at what actually is going on, while science limits itself to the study of matter. But in the nineteenth century we began to get enough good evidence about what happens after death and how it fits with this material reality that soon it began to be possible for us to study all of reality. And soon thereafter we learned that reality is based in a creative force that we experience in a dim way as consciousness. The scientific gatekeepers soon began to see these efforts to understand the greater reality as incursions of religions into scientific turf, so early in the twentieth century we began the third stage of our effort to study reality, which is the realm of energy.

These three stages of human development are mutually exclusive, and yet now all three of them compete with one another. They give us three incompatible views of what actually is going on, and each insists that the other two are missing something big. Both of the first two stages are sharply self-limited; and now we can see that both are fading:

If you had been told that the world will end in two hundred years, what would you do? I suppose your answer would largely depend on the credibility of the source; but let’s assume the source was credible. Would you keep it to yourself? Announce it to the world? Devote the rest of your life to trying to keep the end of the world from happening?

Six years ago this coming May I received precisely that announcement from a highly credible source. I have tried ever since that night to do what I could to delay the end of the world, but I acknowledge now that it hasn’t been much. I have, however, had that warning always foremost in my mind, so it amazes me now to realize that I seem not to have shared it with you beyond a couple of glancing mentions. I think I’ve felt embarrassed by the thought of saying something so alarming just on Spirit’s word alone. But, okay. Thomas has asked me now to tell you the story. He says it is something that you need to hear.

Late in 2014 I had the strong sense that someone in spirit wanted to talk to me. I made an appointment with a well-recommended medium for early in 2015. And after I had a great reunion with my whole extended family at my grandfather’s dairy farm in spirit that overlooks a celestial sea, the medium said that my guides now wanted to have a word with me.

I had lived for more than sixty years with the help of a primary spirit guide that I had met in childhood. He guided me internally, and mainly at night, and he had overseen the channeling of a series of books. The whole relationship was working so well that I had no wish to change it. But although I had no memory of it, apparently for the first time in all our long relationship I had been balking at Thomas’s nighttime guidance. So after the medium had introduced my lesser guides – there were ten, as I recall – I met my beautiful Thomas in person.

I am embarrassed to tell you that my big takeaway from that first face-to-face meeting with him was a groupie’s thrill at having just learned that my primary guide had been Thomas Jefferson in a prior lifetime. I was such a big fan! And apparently I have been his close male friend through seventeen other lifetimes, so he seemed that day to be creeped-out by the fact that I had no memory of our real relationship, and on top of that now I had a schoolgirl crush. I was so star-struck that Thomas said nothing to me. The medium soon ended the session, and Thomas waited for more than a month before he again reached out to us.

My second medium-assisted meeting with Thomas came on May 16, 2015. It began what has become a lovely daytime relationship with my primary spirit guide, but for quite some time that meeting was a highly traumatic memory.

At Easter we celebrate the most important set of events in human history. Insofar as we know, nothing else like it ever has happened, either before or since; and the significance of those events could not have been understood by anyone who witnessed them. Indeed, it is likely that even today we don’t yet know what it all really means! And the fact that a couple of centuries later a new religion created its own dogmas around that extraordinary set of events doesn’t make what happened any less the wondrous possession of ALL of humankind.

Two thousand years ago an element of the highest aspect of the Godhead was born in a human body as God on earth, both to study humanity and to teach us how to achieve the next stage of our spiritual development. To prove to iron-age primitives that death is an illusion, God in human form then allowed Himself to be publicly murdered so His body could lie in a tomb for two days before He re-animated it and rose from the dead. What an amazing story! And now we know that the miraculous events of that extraordinary life were indisputably REAL!

The fact that God chose to be naturally born and to live an entirely human life and death is important. We assume that God knows everything, but in fact my dear spirit guide, Thomas, has told me that once the more spiritually perfected members of the single consciousness that humanity shares cease to incarnate, they pretty quickly lose touch with what it’s like to be a human being. He tells me that Jesus came to us from the highest aspect of the Godhead in part so God could “look through His eyes” and better understand why we were finding it so hard to do what our earth-life is designed to do, which is to help us grow rapidly away from fear and hatred and toward ever more perfect love.

Last Easter we talked about the fact that based upon very extensive modern studies of the Shroud of Turin, the Resurrection of Jesus can be treated as an evidence-based historical event. And in fact, there also is a lot of evidence that Jesus really did live on earth. Astonishingly, there even is evidence that His death in 33 AD was brought about in part by a financial panic (of all things!). And we know now based on evidence that the Gospels are real historical documents, even if they were somewhat altered by later Christian councils. We are fortunate that an army of Christian researchers has been working for more than a century, seeking  every possible confirmation that Jesus is a proven historical figure and the miraculous events of His life were real.

Anglican scholar and bishop N. T. Wright is one of those seeking to prove the reality of Jesus and His miracles. He has written a facts-dense and lengthy book called The Resurrection of the Son of God, where he makes a number of evidence-based claims. He specifically notes that the eyewitness accounts contain details large and small that strongly suggest that these were real events. For example:

Watching mainstream science’s creaking and increasingly decrepit attempts to find a source of consciousness in the brain would be amusing, if it were not so sad. As recently as a decade ago, scientists still remained confident that since the brain must generate consciousness, of course that mechanism soon would be found; more and more now, though, the scientific community has begun to see that the answer to what they call “the hard problem” very sadly might forever elude them, just as the undeniable connection between quantum physics and the actions of the human mind may be forever a puzzlement. Oh, they still insist that the brain must somehow generate consciousness! But the smartest of them are coming to see that they may never figure out quite how it happens. Insofar as I have been able to determine, there still is no mainstream scientific theory that makes consciousness the ground of reality.

This fact is in itself astonishing! The idea that consciousness predates matter is not new. In fact, some of the greatest scientists of the past century have known or suspected that consciousness had to be primary. For example, Max Planck won the 1918 Nobel Prize in Physics as the father of quantum mechanics. In 1931 Dr. Planck said, ”I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.” He said in 1944, “As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my research about atoms this much: There is no matter as such. All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.”

Albert Einstein, another Nobel laureate, never was quite so blunt as Dr. Planck, but apparently he had the same suspicions. For example, he said, “Our experience of separation may be an illusion of consciousness.” And, “The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” Physicist Sir James Jeans simply said, “The universe begins to look more like a great thought than a great machine.”

The problem is that science is not the open-minded search for the truth that we so fondly wish it were. More than a century ago, the mainstream scientific gatekeepers – the university departments and the peer-reviewed journals – decided to make materialism a “core scientific dogma” in order to protect what they saw as the broad field of pure inquiry from the corrupting influence of religion, and to insulate scientists from any obligation to investigate the flood of good communications from the dead that were then being received. Those long-ago gatekeepers’ intentions seem to have been honorable when they took this step; but the plain fact is that anything based on a dogma is a belief-system, by definition. And a belief-system, be it religious or secular, will gradually become a fly in amber, insulated from new ideas that might potentially violate its dogmas and therefore more and more completely wrong.

The requirement that we pray to God is another human-made idea. God seeks a very much closer and more loving relationship with  us than that! And I’m glad, because I really can’t pray those old formal churchy prayers anymore. Once I began to understand the glorious truth about reality, saying rote prayers to God made me feel self-conscious and foolish, as if I were speaking aloud and formally to my own deepest heart. There is no cranky God outside and above us, eager to see us prostrate our bodies and debase our minds! Here are some glorious eternal truths that beat religions by a country mile:

  • Our minds are all inextricably part of the one Mind that continuously manifests this universe. We are not in any way separate from God.
  • Our minds are open to the Godhead, to our spirit guides, and in general to others in spirit. They tell us they give us privacy and we shouldn’t be creeped-out to learn how public our thoughts are, but in fact there is no such thing as a private thought.
  • Our minds are eternal. We live forever! And we live forever as an ever more completely assimilated part of the Godhead that so perfectly loves us that each of us is God’s best-beloved child.

Coming to understand these glorious truths some twenty-odd years ago made me surrender whatever privacy I still thought I had. I began to live with an open prayer-line, a sense that the top of my head was wide open. I was aware in each moment that my every thought and emotion was available to God, and the more I lived this way, the happier and more peaceful I became. God was inside me! I no longer saw a place where I left off and God began. It was then that I began to feel stupid about reciting the Catholic rote prayers at Mass, and even reciting the Nicene Creed made me feel embarrassed before God. I urge you for your own mental peace to read the two-year-old post linked here, and similarly welcome God into your mind. Just be aware that when you invite God in, God will never again be a distant stranger you can try to keep distant by genuflecting now and then and reciting some rote prayers.

When we try to consider human history from the viewpoint of the Godhead Itself, we can begin to see the life of Jesus a bit more as the Godhead might see it. Working this out has been a series of revelations. What seem like throwaway lines in the Gospels have a background and a purpose, and the Lord’s core teachings can be traced back to words of the prophets in ways that make sense to us. From a more Godly perspective, the march of human history over the past 200,000 years looks to be spiritually arrow-straight and highly purposeful! If you have the time, please look back at the past articles in this series, in order. What we are trying to understand as deeply as we can and from the perspective of the Creator is the actual process by which this illusory universe has unfolded for humankind. All the invented past as it now exists is the Godhead’s attempt to educate us spiritually, and we know that because the entire history of this universe is freshly created in each micro-instant. So what is in the past is only and completely what the Godhead wants us to find there Now!

Reading the Gospels from this perspective is a great exercise. It reinforces for us even more deeply Who Jesus is in relation to the Godhead. At times, you almost can see His mind working! And it lets you glimpse a little of the Godhead’s thinking while an aspect of the Godhead, having been born in a human body, interacts with people who can have no idea of the miracle they are witnessing. This exploration by itself could fill a book! But we will here consider just a couple of topics. Let’s briefly watch and listen from our amazing new perspective as the Lord goes about His earthly life:

John the Baptist Was Elijah Reincarnated to Fulfill Isaiah’s Prophesy

 One of the things that we can do now is to look more closely at the role of John the Baptist. For Christians, the point of the Gospel narrative about the Baptist is that baptism itself is spiritually magical. But when we try to take the Godhead’s perspective, we realize that the ritual is beside the point: it could have been a handshake, a certain kind of hat, or almost anything that John was doing which allowed God to single Jesus out, tie Him to prophesy, and announce that He had come from God and was representing God on earth. There had to be such an anointing moment. Without it, the whole ministry of Jesus might not in retrospect have been seen as sufficiently special to have been marked out and remembered in such a way that even after two thousand years He remains among the world’s most beloved people. Note here that the word “repent” has been changed to “reform your mind,” which is closer to the meaning of the Greek word used. And John also talks about the process that was central to the message of Jesus. John the Baptist declares that the focus of his work and the Lord’s is to bring the kingdom of God (or heaven) on earth. All the gods that we ever have worshiped have been humanmadeThis is true even of the Christian God, who is based on the ancient Hebrew Yahweh. We have imagined the modern versions of our gods to be less cruel and a lot less scary, but still their ancient shape remains. And now I am wondering why.  Humanity has long since split the atom, journeyed to the moon, even begun to cure cancer; but still we envision the same static God for whom the first Christian martyrs died. We haven’t even progressed to the much more loving God-just-as-Spirit that Jesus introduced! Despite the tweaks of the Protestant Reformation, we still adhere to basically the same Christianity that ruled by superstitious terror, carried out the barbaric Crusades, and tortured and burned many infidels alive.

But why should it still have to be this way, when at last we know that there actually is a genuine Creator God unlike any god that any religion has imagined? Being reminded last week of the staggering eternal importance of the Easter events that we never could have fully appreciated until after the twenty-first century began has made me think that it might be time for us to reconsider everything. Two thousand years ago the Godhead directly intervened in human history in a way that was designed to be fully obvious to us only two thousand years later. It was a genuine divine revelation! But then, as with every other religion, Christianity was created and soon frozen in time. Its dogmas have changed little in a thousand years.  If God was watching our subsequent progress and later judged that the time was right for another major revelation, then unfortunately God would have been out of luck because the religion based in the incomparable divine events that were the life and teachings of Jesus has been sealed by its people for all time. If the Godhead has something more to say, how will any of us ever hear it? Isn’t it time for us to start to try to better understand what the living God actually wants?

Albert Einstein was a gigantic intellect, but at heart he was a relatable guy. One day in 1925 as he shared a walk with a young student he said to her, I want to know how God created this world. I’m not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know His thoughts. The rest are just details.” How perfectly wise he was! And now you and I want to know God’s thoughts about the Godhead’s eternal plan for humankind. We aren’t interested in physics, which turns out to be a mere detail of this limited illusion that seems to be solid but in fact is not. Nothing physical is objectively real, since all that actually exists is Mind; and the laws and details of human physics seem more and more to be just the Godhead’s inventions to keep us amused and distracted. And of course that raises yet another question! There have been increasing hints that the Godhead is a Collective of Perfected Beings that is continuously creating the universe freshly in each instant of artificial time, and is steadily making our past more complex in what seems to be an effort to stay ahead of our attempts to figure things out. But why is that? What on earth is going on?

A quick perusal of our archive here reveals that we have asked variations of these biggest of all human questions many times, but always just in limited ways. It seems that we had to tackle this process in pieces and build toward even knowing how to ask the biggest questions. And beings who are no longer in bodies have lately been telling us that the limited aspects of our vast, eternal minds that we bring into these material bodies are meant just for efficient spiritual learning. They say that we cannot possibly expect to use such puny earth-minds to address the very biggest things!

Last week we talked about what modern evidence tells us is true about our one reality. Now let’s look at some important questions. How did all of this come into being? How is it maintained? And what can we learn about the Un-Caused Cause that has to be behind it all?

This reality is all of one piece. Our human predilection to study aspects of it from different perspectives, using different methods and even fundamentally different terms, has fooled us into thinking it even is possible to study anything this way! We long have assumed that all the aspects of reality that we were studying separately were going to fit seamlessly and make perfect sense whenever we tried to put them together. But this whole way of thinking is nonsense. There is not a physical reality and a spiritual reality, a chemical, biological, and physics reality, a psychological reality, a mental reality, a secular, cosmic, and divine reality. Whole books could be written about why this doesn’t work and how none of the pieces now fits with all the others, but here are just four quick examples of the mess that our habit of studying reality in fragments has created:

  • Origins. The whole notion that this universe exploded into being 13.8 billion years ago and proceeded to work itself out and grow from there has become a part of our cultural knowledge. But even if the Big Bang theory is right, there is a lot about it that doesn’t make sense according to current scientific understandings. And more importantly, the Big Bang cannot explain how so much matter sprang from nothing! As the eminent Rupert Sheldrake has said, the scientific approach to the origin of the universe is “Give us one free miracle and we’ll explain the rest.” As an aborigine who believed the world rides on the back of a turtle said when someone asked him what the turtle was standing on, “It’s turtles all the way down.” The Big Bang theory describes just part of a process, and it does not explain how or why that process began. How did so much something come from nothing?
  • Physics. The advent of quantum mechanics set off an academic scramble to unify the world of Einstein with the world of Planck. The problem is that quantum mechanics violates some laws of physics as they have long been understood, but it was the basis for some of the twentieth century’s most important developments so it cannot be ignored. Let’s be blunt here. If we must work from within traditional physics to try to understand quantum physics, a unified theory can never be found.

The more we learn about reality, the more we realize it is one seamless whole. There is no separation between the physical reality that we think we see around us now, and the spiritual reality that is all around us and within us, through us, and so deeply central to every moment of our lives that it may very well be all that is real. This physical reality is an illusion, and shown to be that by the fact that it is composed of atoms which are nothing but energy. If the White House were the nucleus of an atom, placed where it is and the size that it is, then its closest orbiting electron could be as far away as Denver. And there would be nothing between them! We look closer, and we realize that even that atomic nucleus and its orbiting electron are nothing but vortices of energy. Physicists still call them particles for nostalgia’s sake, but they are not solid particles. The only reason why you cannot put your hand right through your desk is that the vortices of energy in your hand conflict with the vortices of energy in your desk.

The more deeply you come to understand the truth about reality, the more often you find yourself experiencing unexpected bursts of joy. I still recall the thrill of reviewing all the accumulated evidence one morning and being dumbstruck by the realization that it was impossible for the afterlife not to be real. And then I recall all the separate thrills as I was discovering additional facts, each of them something like an odd-shaped piece of one amazingly complex puzzle, until eventually now we have the whole picture. Just a few small gaps remain to be filled. Even after all these decades, the wonder of just how beautiful the greater reality is and how devotedly each of us is loved still makes me grin to think of it.

I have told you a lot about what I have learned in my half-century of doing this work. But what I realize now is that I never have adequately managed to convey to you some sense of the chest-swelling joy that will be your mindset for the rest of your earthly life once you manage to get your mind around the truth of what actually is going on!

I receive many emails from people that I never will meet in life. Ever since The Fun of Dying came out in 2010, I have been answering afterlife questions from people who are desperate to believe that a love-filled afterlife is possible. And some of those who email me are angry! They are so steeped in religious fears or in rank scientific negativity that the bit of light I have brought into the unrelenting grimness of their beliefs feels to them at first to be an act of torment. “If what you are saying is true, prove it!” Of late, however, more of my emails are filled with the joyous wonder of people who are only now realizing that their whole lives have been suffused by the love of Spirit. They have learned enough about how reality works that at last they can see the spiritual overlay of every minute of their whole earth-lives. The daily workings of Spirit have always been so reverently done, so unobtrusive and respectful, that until they began to grasp the greater reality and their place in it, they hardly even noticed events that you would have thought would have rocked their lives!

Modern humans have existed on earth for roughly two hundred thousand yearsThose earliest moderns lived in terror of predators, disease, hunger, weather, and lethal attacks by one another, so among the earliest human inventions were religions that featured powerful gods. In an effort to ease our fears in a world where we had no control and even less understanding, we imagined large beings in human form who could protect us. And to ensure the favor of these made-up gods that we imagined were as brutal and as fickle as people, we invented the notion that they could be placated by sacrificing some of what we most valued, especially our firstborn childrenThe whole concept of religions to serve cranky gods is an entirely human invention. And this idea that we can improve our lives by placating gods is a stubborn one, so even as late as the birth of Jesus the Jewish tribes were still sacrificing birds, animals, and grain to a god they called Jehovah. With such a history, it is easy to see why the execution and the miraculous rising from the dead of the greatest Jewish Teacher Who had come to us from the genuine Godhead must have seemed to be the ultimate sacrifice. God sacrificed His Firstborn to Himself! Now God is placated forevermore!

But the genuine Godhead doesn’t play human games. There is no evidence that the death of Jesus has ever made an afterlife difference for a single human being, and if it ever had happened we would know that by now. The genuine Godhead is all that exists, and that Godhead is infinitely greater and far more perfectly loving than any religion ever has imagined. Each of us is inextricably part of the Godhead. And God doesn’t want our sacrifices, our worship, or anything from us at all but that we work in eternal harmony toward eventually achieving the Godhead’s own level of  absolute and perfect love. And since all religions are based in fear, one of the primary missions of Jesus when He came to earth two thousand years ago was not to start a new religion, but rather to free us from all the old ones.

Chapter Six of Matthew is the second of the three chapters that give us the Lord’s Sermon on the Mount. It feels like a cozy harbor after the sea of surprises in Chapter Five; it rests so gently on our minds that we fail to realize how radical these ideas were when He first spoke them. Chapter Six is about rising above religious fears, how essential that is, and how easy it can be.

No one who enjoyed last Sunday’s celebrations – all pastel flowers and chocolate eggs and carving a ham on the holiday table – can have given any serious thought to what Easter is supposed to mean. Christians refer to Jesus as our “Savior” and “Redeemer.” Those words so gaily trip off the tongue! God proved His perfect love for us when He sent His only begotten Son to die for our sins. Pass the raisin sauce.

The Easter story makes no sense. How could a loving and rational God do any of the following?

  • Eternally blame us for whatever Adam might have done in the Garden of Eden;
  • Demand a blood-sacrifice from us in atonement for Adam’s sins and for our own;
  • Refuse to be satisfied by any possible sacrifice that we might provide;
  • Beget a perfect Son on earth specifically to be our sacrifice to Him;
  • Enjoy the horrible murder of His Son enough that at last He can forgive us.

After two experiences of light in childhood, naturally I was an ardent Christian. Having married a Catholic, I was a Catholic Christian, a Catechism teacher, a Lector, and such a devoted daily reader of the Bible that I have read it cover-to-cover at least a dozen times. Each time I got to the final page of Revelation, I would read the New Testament a second time and then plunge back in with Genesis I. I was a Christian with a Capital “C.”

But during all those years, I also was reading volumes of early-twentieth-century communications from dead people. In hundreds of British and American communications, never have I found any evidence that God or another religious figure ever has judged anyone; nor have I seen the smallest hint that the death of Jesus makes an afterlife difference. Gradually, the disconnect between what Christianity insists is true and what the dead were telling me became so unbearable that I stopped altogether reading the Bible in my early fifties. I still went to Mass for my husband’s sake, but I tried not to listen. I tried to ignore the life-size, full-color bleeding Jesus who looked down sadly from the cross above the altar.

It took me further years of researching the afterlife before I developed enough conviction to be able to say these words aloud: “Christianity is wrong. Jesus does not redeem us.” I ducked, but there was no lightning bolt. At that point, I was no longer a Christian.

I feel foolish now about not having gone back sooner to reading only the Gospels. I remembered enough of what Jesus had said to know that some of it jibed with the afterlife evidence, but still I was afraid that perhaps he had said some things that were glaringly untrue. And, Christian or not, I still loved Jesus. I couldn’t bear to test him.

One of the reasons why it is so essential that mainstream scientists begin to get a clue about the nature of reality is that the truth is so wonderfully explanatory. Human minds are part of eternal Mind, which is the core creative force and the only reality. All of this is as scientific as anything could be scientific, and it is at the core of what we all should be thinking as we study reality.

Mainstream science, however, remains a belief-system. Whatever doesn’t fit its predetermined dogmas is taboo, and cannot be studied by any scientist who cares about his own career.

If you don’t believe me, then listen to my friend Hank Green, who is a wonderful popularizer of traditional science and my particular guilty pleasure. Green puts out frequent videos on Scishow.com that explain a lot of cool scientific stuff. The videos are brief, the information is wonderful, and the man himself is so entertaining that I cannot get through the day anymore without watching at least one SciShow video. While Green himself would be the first to insist that every scientist stay on the mainstream reservation, he is open-minded enough to at least say that scientists have their own taboos.

Green cheerfully tells us that scientific taboos have existed “forever” because scientists are desperate to protect “their jobs, their tenure, or their credibility.” He lets us know that today this unwillingness to study anything that doesn’t fit “current social norms” is called “the Simmelweis Reflex” after Dr. Ignaz Simmelweis, a Hungarian physician who in the 1840s proposed that doctors should wash their hands before delivering babies. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries so many women died of childbed fever that it was normal for men to bury several wives. Simmelweis was preaching common sense, but his radical idea was received with horror. He was fired from his job and hounded out of medicine, eventually dying in 1865 in an insane asylum.

Cultural realities shape our lives in ways that become so ingrained that we often don’t see evils for the evils they are. When you and I look around, we can see lots of things about present-day America that are likely to appall our descendants, from overstuffed prisons and third-trimester abortions to vast disparities in wealth and station and the careless ways in which we inflict adult entertainment on our children. The fact that you and I don’t become personally involved in any of these practices doesn’t let us off the hook, since if enough of us protested, things would change.

Thomas and Martha Jefferson were born into a world in which the slavery of peoples brought here from Africa had been part of their culture for a century. It was a normal evil, just as the things mentioned above are evils that seem normal to us. Having been born near the pinnacle of a society in which slavery was a fact of life, both Thomas Jefferson and Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson inherited human beings.

They were stuck with slavery. As Jefferson said later in life, they had a wolf by the ear: they could neither hold onto it nor safely let it go. And being freed was not an attractive option for a slave in Eighteenth-Century Virginia. It was legal at that time for anyone who encountered a freed former slave to enslave him again; and even beyond Virginia, freedmen lived wretched lives on the margins of white society. Discovering that Jefferson felt stuck with slavery as an institution that he detested was an important step for me, since I don’t think I could have written My Thomas if the truth were otherwise.

One of the creepiest things I have read in awhile is an article about someone who intends to create a powerful artificial intelligence and build a new religion around it. Good grief, what would be the point of that? It’s as if science has at last achieved a religious singularity! The fact that human religions create their own gods – and it never happens the other way around – is now being not only acknowledged, but celebrated.

Of course, this foolishness is just a logical extension of a current scientific pursuit. The search for ways to make human beings physically immortal is The Next Big Thing! Although it’s hard to see why anyone would want to be immortal now, when before long every human being is going to be a slave to conscious killer robots. It turns out, too, that even what seems to you and me to be genuine love is just a matter-based illusion that human beings evolved to experience because it enhances reproductive success. And perhaps worst of all, this scientific obsession with believing that the brain must generate consciousness is tying people in knots with the fear that advances in artificial intelligence are drawing us closer to the day when a machine configured to mimic a human being inevitably will develop consciousness, and soon thereafter our species will end at the hands of a smarter and stronger robot army.

Every one of these scenarios is nonsense. The human brain does not generate consciousness. Instead, consciousness is the source of all matter, including what makes up your physical brain! This obvious truth seems at last to be dawning on a few more open-minded scientists, but their problem is that a century’s research has been based on the absolute certainty that the brain must somehow generate consciousness. By now, scientists are trying hard not to discover the truth about consciousness, since sadly that truth might threaten their careers. They are hoping not to rock the scientific boat until at least the day their own kids finish college.

So since the scientific stonewalling continues, it is time for us to say this bluntly. Mainstream science has allowed its materialist dogma to destroy whatever was left of the whole field of scientific inquiry. Not a single major scientific discovery will be possible, ever again, until the scientific community accepts two facts:

My Thomas is about the American Revolution. It is a true story of the kind of love that few of us ever manage to find, and a carefully researched examination of the formative years of one of America’s Founding Fathers, but at its heart it is the tale of a group of people who mutually pledged “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor” to the fight for their freedom. They risked it all.

It is difficult for us now to imagine what a new thing that fight for freedom was. The American Revolution was the first time in history that any colony had attempted to throw off its parent country, and the grievances on which the Revolution was based were by most standards slight. Those at the front of the fight – the young Jeffersons included – were proud to consider themselves to be Englishmen. So why did they risk their lives and everything they had to throw off what was such a modest yoke that two other British colonies – Canada and Australia – are still sort-of members of the British Commonwealth today? Why did the American Revolution happen?

I wondered about that more and more as I researched Thomas Jefferson’s early life and wrote My Thomas. The public words that Thomas speaks in the novel are from his contemporary writings, and as you read them you can see that at first he didn’t expect bloodshed. He saw the colonists as simply claiming their natural rights as Englishmen when they decided to throw off a relationship with England that they had outgrown. As the colonists begin to claim their rights, and as the parent country objects, you see the Revolution developing as a kind of colossal misunderstanding. More than once I wanted to tell them all just to sit around a table and work this out!

I love popular science magazines. Scientific American is my favorite, but DiscoverNewScientist,and Science News also are immensely entertaining. I began reading popular science a couple of decades ago as I tried to puzzle out the physics of the realities into which we graduate at death. What I learned was that many of the peculiarities of physics in the greater reality can be nicely explained once you have even a nodding acquaintance with quantum physics. I learned a lot more as well. And sadly, the more I learned about the issues that torment mainstream scientists now, the more I began to see how in nearly every case I was able to offer insights and explanations that came from my study of the afterlife evidence. Mainstream science has been off the rails and into the weeds for the past century because it still refuses to consider all the implications of quantum physics.

The most important insight to come from quantum physics is one that mainstream physicists still ignore. What we think of as human consciousness is primary and pre-existing.The great Max Planck, who won the Nobel Prize in 1918 as the father of quantum physics, said it better than I can. In 1931 he said, ”I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.”

Dear friends, this was the greatest scientific discovery of the twentieth century. It might have been the greatest scientific discovery of all time. And even now, a full century later, mainstream scientists continue to ignore it.

The reason why the discovery that consciousness is primary still terrifies mainstream scientists so much that to this day they walk around with their fingers in their ears and humming loudly is a topic for another blog post. I have tried to understand something that makes no sense at all, and I think I can give you partial answers. But the fact that the discovery that consciousness is primary is being altogether ignored has meant that many mainstream scientists continue to spend their careers pursuing nonsense and getting nowhere.Meanwhile, the insights that could have come from their having pursued this extraordinary discovery are left to be supplied by a business attorney with a passion for studying the afterlife evidence.

A few weeks ago I talked about some of the ways in which the fact that mainstream science has ignored the afterlife evidence has made scientists unable to understand some seemingly unrelated things. When you arbitrarily choose to ignore all evidence related to a major aspect of reality, then naturally your understanding of the rest of reality will be distorted! The levels of reality that we enter at death exist precisely where we are but at a higher vibratory rate, very much as different television channels exist in the same place but at different frequencies. Choosing to study only Channel Five, as mainstream science still does, is going to make you oblivious of the content and effects of all those other channels.

For scientists to flat ignore nearly two hundred years of abundant and consistent communications from the dead, and for them further to ignore all the related implications of quantum physics and consciousness research, is going to mean that their attempts to study their own “approved” aspects of reality will come up against repeated frustrations. I enjoy reading popular-science magazines, in part because so often when I discover some new scientific conundrum I can readily think of plausible explanations that are related to the greater reality of which this universe is an integral part (see Mainstream Science is off the Rails, June 28, 2014).

I hadn’t planned to be back on this topic so soon, but I have just learned something else that confounds me. Scientists have only now discovered that eighty percent – eighty percent – of the detectable light in the nearby universe seems to have no discernible source!

To quote the article linked above: “It’s as if you’re in a big, brightly lit room, but you look around and see only a few 40-watt lightbulbs,” astronomer Juna Kollmeier — a Carnegie Institution for Science professor and the lead author of the new study on missing light said in a statement this week. “Where is all that light coming from?”

As you might surmise from my blog posts of June 28 and August 4, I am fascinated by dark matter and energy, and struck by the possibility that they might be, respectively, the post-death levels of our reality and the base creative force (Mind, Source, or God – your choice). The 95% of the universe that is composed of dark matter and dark energy is called “dark” because it won’t interact with photon-based light. It is demonstrably not material, but that makes it not one bit less real! And, more and more, we are coming to suspect that dark matter and dark energy might in fact be the afterlife levels and the Source. Consider:

  • The post-death levels have been established by abundant and consistent evidence pulled together over the past nearly 200 years, and they exist precisely where we are. If they were detectable by us at all, we would imagine that they would not react with the photon-based light of this level of reality, but they might interact with gravity. Dark matter fills that bill precisely. It is said now to make up 27% of the universe, while physical matter makes up less than 5%. Given that there are about six afterlife levels beneath the Source level, the proportions here seem to be amazingly right.
  • Consciousness is primary and pre-existing. Quantum physicist Max Planck figured this out more than eighty years ago. He said: I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.”
  • The base creative force is continuously creating this universe. As we have come to understand it, Mind exists outside of time as a kind of consciousness grid that continuously creates this material universe as something like a thought. Physicist Sir James Jeans brilliantly observed, “The universe begins to look more like a great thought than like a great machine.” For Mind to be detectable only as dark energy, and for it to make up 68% of the universe and be evenly integrated with it throughout, is about what we would expect.

A recent study of more than a thousand children in six countries shows a strong negative correlation between religious practice and altruism.The study found that family religious identification decreased children’s altruistic behaviors and reduced their empathy and their sensitivity to perceived injustices. Children from religious households also tended to be more judgmental, and harsher in their punitive tendencies.

Many Christians are shocked by these results. But are they so surprising? When we teach our children that their own family is “saved” while other people are not, that their particular denomination is the one God loves, and that people who engage in behaviors the Old Testament condemns are going to be damned by God, then they are learning from the cradle to disdain most of the human race. Christianity as it is practiced today teaches the opposite of altruism. It teaches self-satisfied superiority. And if there is any flavor of moral poison the world needs to be rid of now, it’s that one!

Of course, it isn’t only Christian children who are being harmed by their religion. Seeing how Islam can turn even young Westerners into killers presents a cautionary tale for us all. Not only is it no longer possible to argue that religion is a force for good, but the argument certainly can be made that religion as it is practiced today is something that we might be better off without. How much of the callousness of modern society comes not in spite of religious practice, but in part because of it? I never have given that question much thought, but now I wonder. I really wonder.

Perhaps many folks can point to a single moment that transformed their lives, although for most that watershed moment likely happened when they were a bit older. I was eight years old on that singular night in April of 1955 when I went to bed as a normal kid. Then I was awakened just before dawn, and I was never normal again.

It must have been about four o’clock in the morning. Nearly sixty years later I still remember it well. I woke up with the throat-clenching, heart-pounding certainty that there is no God. No God! There is nothing but screaming clockwork terror in an infinite void of nothing. I have never in my life been so afraid. As that lack of God went on for minutes, I thought of running to my parents’ bed. But what comfort can there be when there is no God?

As I stared in panic into the darkness, there came a brilliant flash of white light. It was big! It filled my room with light, so to this day I recall the lavender wallpaper with its purple and white cornflowers, the bookcase with its row of dolls, the plastic palomino with its ball-chain reins. Oddly, such a brilliant light in the darkness didn’t affect my eyes. I stared in amazement.

Then I heard a young male voice say, “You wouldn’t know what it is to have me unless you knew what it is to be without me. I will never leave you again.”

Having mentioned William Stainton Moses last week, I can’t resist sharing with you some thoughts about Imperator, who was the leading spirit to communicate with Moses and the core author of an extraordinary nineteenth-century book called Spirit Teachings.

In general, the century from about 1840 until 1940 was a heyday of frequent, comprehensive, and often highly evidential communications from people who were ostensibly dead but actually were more alive than ever in a greater reality that is more or less exactly where we are. There are reasons why this flood of good communications happened then and didn’t continue past mid-century, some of which reasons relate to the communicators and some to the receivers. But the important thing is that there were brilliant and often skeptical researchers with impeccable backgrounds and little reason to want to fool us involved in many of these communication episodes, and much of their work has been preserved.

Despite the debunker nonsense that you will find on Wikipedia and other websites that are desperate to keep you from knowing the truth, William Stainton Moses was a breathtakingly accurate and honest nineteenth-century medium. A clergyman by profession, he had a special facility with automatic writing, and a group of advanced beings chose to communicate through him during the 1870s. Their book, Spirit Teachings, is astonishing!  What the dead had to say in the 1870s about the greater reality, human nature, the message of Jesus, and life after death is so breathtakingly consistent with the more recent afterlife evidence that I am repeatedly blown away by it. The odds against chance for such detailed agreement are so small as to make coincidence impossible.

My mother married my father because she was pregnant. As an adult I thanked her for having gone ahead with the pregnancy and given me life, and she said, “You’re assuming I had a choice?” So I must admit to sharing the core aversion that many people have to abortion, but I am not avidly on either side of the issue. I only note that our culture has become an abortion culture, in which the disposal of fetuses has become an easy substitute for personal responsibility and common sense.

Reportedly, forty percent of pregnancies in the United States now end in abortion. Nearly thirty percent of American women will have had an abortion by the age of 45. In New York City, more than half the African-American children who are conceived are aborted. Just hold these statistics in your mind for a moment.

In the same way that you and I live in an abortion culture, Thomas and Martha Jefferson lived in a slaveholding culture. Both of them inherited slaves in a colony in which freeing them was illegal, and even in the colonies where blacks could live free, they suffered miserably as society’s dregs. That Jefferson detested slavery is abundantly clear from his contemporary writings. That he concluded that these slaves he was stuck with were better off in his care than sold of or freed seems sensible, especially given the fact that during his marriage – the period covered by My Thomas – he seems to have been hopeful that slavery could soon be ended.

A recent review of My Thomas has made me see our abortion statics in a new light. Of course, it is hard to put ourselves into the minds of those living in other cultures, but this tendency that some now have to judge slaveholders as irremediably evil and insist that those people should have known better makes me wince.
